Q. Tell Me about Yourself

Seong Cheol Woo seeks to do “what his heart wants to do to become what he wants to be,” which the title of this project (“You Are What You Do”) suggests. The shapes and colors of hearts have a wide spectrum, but he believes the most crucial material for arts education is a pure form of heart almost with no color and without any pointy, sharp corners. This is the arts education he attempts to practice.

Q. What Is Your Driving Force or Inspiration of Your Practice?

What inspires my practice is laughter. I try to laugh a lot and have fun in my daily life. I believe that arts and culture education, created by the positive energy that I generate when I’m pleasant and happy, can give laughter and fun to other people.

Q. What is a Teaching Artist?
Describe the Teaching Artist You Would Like to Become in Ten Years.

A teaching artist is a person who has one’s own view and philosophy of the world. I would like to become a teaching artist who can convey my own value of arts distinguishable from other teaching artists in the same field or of the same theme.

Q. What is the Metaphor, the Right Word, for your Practice?
And Why?

Pyongyang naengmyeon. It looks like a simple bowl of noodles, but it’s difficult to make a good bowl of naengmyeon. Its each element, including broth, noodles, and garnish, requires a delicate attention and endeavor to cook. I want my life to be like a dish of pyongyang naengmyeon: a simple, modest but tasteful life.

Q. What Do Colleagues Mean to You?

Those who can share worries together. They are people who can guide other colleagues to make the best outcome even it may not be the number one.
